AFROEQUALITY
The AFROEQUALITY project, funded by the European Commission under the CERV-2023-EQUAL initiative, aims at strengthening members of the African communities in Greece, Italy and Spain through research, empowerment and dissemination activities. The project is investigating for the first time the culture and integration of African communities in the selected countries. Adopting an intersectional approach, it addresses Afrophobia and discrimination faced by people of African descent.
It is geared towards building trust between the local and the African communities in the partner countries, and thus contribute towards promoting gender mainstreaming and battling structural racism in respective national contexts. Targeting primarily people of African descent between 18-45 years old but also the general public. Key activities include developing a plan to combat racism, conducting training for 180 individuals, and initiating communication campaigns to fight xenophobia and hate speech.
The role of Convergence:
In the AFROEQUALITY project, Convergence work is primarily dedicated to leading communication initiatives to fight Afrophobia, xenophobia, and hate speech. Efforts involve raising awareness and engaging stakeholders and the public on matters of equality, participation, and the culture of POC and people of African descent, as well as communicating and disseminating the project's results locally, nationally, and internationally to maximise its impact. A key activity is the development of the AFROEQUALITY Empowerment App, an interactive game that promotes understanding of cultural identity, interculturality, and alternative narratives, aimed at empowering all users, not just POCs, to appreciate diversity.
